Hello, we’re John Line and Scott Swiontek, a.k.a. the Lineteks. We’re a couple who decided to leave our jobs – and our beloved Brooklyn – to travel the world for a year and a half, also known as The Line Trek!
Our trip recently wrapped up (sad!) and we’re currently settling down in Seattle (love it so far!) but we learned so much in planning and executing our trip that we still have lots to share with all of you! Plans started coming together over a year before our trip started and since then we’ve become experts on airline mileage programs, housing rentals, and general travel hacking. Our hope is that this blog can help inspire your own travel adventure – and that you can learn from both our experiences and our mistakes :).
Now here is a little bit more about each of us…
Hi, I’m Scott! I was born and grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania just outside of Scranton. I’ve always loved travel and even when I was a little kid used to help my parents plan trips and pick our hotels! I went to college at the University of Pittsburgh where I became a die-hard Steelers fan and an eternal lover of the city of Pittsburgh. My urge to travel never really subsided and during college did Semester at Sea which was one of the greatest experiences of my life and my first time around the globe… 11 countries in 100 days!
I then moved to New York City to work as a talent agent for about 10 years. I represented actors and actresses in film, television, and theatre. It was a crazy demanding job but also crazy rewarding and a lot of fun. Over the years I’ve been able to go to the film festivals of Cannes, Toronto, and Sundance – not too shabby! Negotiating deals, hunting down auditions, and visiting sets were part of my everyday life.
One spring day I met John at a Front Runners NY (gay running club) weekly event in Central Park. We quickly fell in love and within the first few weeks of meeting each other realized we had both booked trips to Buenos Aires separately over the same period of time! Fate! I found my travel buddy and future husband… A few years later we got engaged in Paris and later married in Brooklyn.
We were very fortunate to be able to make the decision to leave everything (our jobs, friends, family, Brooklyn!) to travel around the world visiting places we only dreamed of ever going. It was a crazy adventure and it’s so exciting to share all of it with you. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading our blog as much an we enjoy writing it!
Hey, I’m John! I grew up in the Bay Area and am a proud Californian (west coast best coast!). When I was 17 I took a job that would, unbeknownst to me, change the course of my life: working at the local REI Co-Op. That experience taught me to appreciate the outdoors and helped me develop a passion for exploring. It also started me on an 8 year career path that took me to Atlanta, Austin, and on to Seattle.
I eventually left the Co-Op to pursue a career in advertising and landed in New York City, where I lived and worked for 10 years. I met Scott – now my husband – at a running club in Central Park and soon found that we shared many of the same interests: a passion for travel, great food, and amazing adventures.
For years Scott and I traveled the world together, 5-10 days a time. The trips were great, but they always seemed too short. So, we decided to leave everything behind (goodbye jobs, goodbye apartment!) to spend the next year and a half traveling the world the way we had always dreamed of. It was an amazing experience, to say the least.
I’m hopeful our adventure, as documented in this blog, proves informative and entertaining for you, but mostly I hope it inspires you to see more of this amazing planet.
